Lep Series 1 - Satyrium spini

Hi all,

I start this Lepidoptera series which will be dedicated to the Lycaenidae family for awhile, with a widespread species in Portugal (and the rest of Europe): Satyrium spini (fam. Lycaenidae, Theclinae)

Found usually in hedges, sparse forests and dense mediterranean scrubland, I believe this species has somewhat shrunk its distribution are in Portugal due to the loss of habitat to Eucaliptus plantations and the use of herbicides in paths and along tracks.

The caterpillars feed on shrubs like Crataegus monogyna and especially Rhamnus species and are fairly well limited to areas where they occur.

There are two other species in the genus in Portugal: Satyrium ilicis and S. esculi.
